Alda's upbringing played a huge part in her journey to becoming an interior designer." It was really an organic progression from my early interest in comic books that led to fashion, then to an appreciation of art and architecture and interior design. My parents indulged me at 12 and allowed me to 'design' their living room. That ignited a passion that has never subsided." Today, Alda Pereira Design is celebrated for their earthy modern lines and site oriented concepts. With a versatile portfolio that spans across North America, from urban residences to casual weekend retreats, creative retail and corporate spaces. Alda's interior design work is apparent yet soul-stirring. Out of her very busy schedule, Alda took the time to provide us with the opportunity to get a glimpse of her very own world. Unfolding personal anecdotes that many of us don't already know. Alda emphasized the importance of our sleep space where she shared with us her own bedroom secrets and her love for natural beddings, read on to find out more. How did Alda Pereira Design Inc. come about? "It was born out of necessity ;). I graduated design school in an economic downtime and there weren't any internships available at that time. Luckily, my neighbour was looking for someone to take on the design of her new hair salon which I ultimately won the IDBC Gold award and subsequently launched my career." How would you describe your design methodology? "We approach each project with a clean slate, and each very site-specific. We have always practiced with an eye to sustainability and wellness." What inspires you about interior design? "I really enjoy the process much more than the end result, from establishing the concept to creating the building blocks to the realization of it is really what drives me." How do you think the pandemic has changed the way we live? "I think the pandemic has allowed us to stop and reevaluate what is important in our lives. It has highlighted how much we took for granted; such as our health, and our families." What does the word "home" mean to you personally? "Home has always been a somewhat spiritual & emotional experience for me - I really enjoy practicing 'the art of living' which I consider as the appreciation & elevation of small, everyday activities, such as tea drinking, cooking, or bed making. In this sense, the home becomes an altar of these domestic rituals. In this sense, it is a container of ideas and the formation of rituals." What are your tips for making a bed look gorgeous? "When you think about it, it is a functional piece of furniture that is used roughly 8 hours a day, and the rest of the time it is something that consumes a lot of space so I think it is essential to make that physical presence a visual experience. The selection of good quality bedding is equally important to the bed itself." What do you love about Sömn bedding and why? "My love of bedding was instilled in me at a very early age. Bedding and linens are a hallmark of Portuguese culture and subsequently, they are a very important element in the home. Pressed, crisp linens and impeccably made beds are some of my earliest memories of childhood but my preferences have given way to softer, drapey unprocessed linens. Sömn linens really bring that home to me, and impart the softness and hand that I find comforting and enveloping." What kinds of projects will you be working on in the coming months? "We are currently working on a couple of renovations in West Vancouver & Vancouver. We are also working on a multi-dwelling project in Vancouver and a vacation home in Portugal." - Find out more about Alda Pereira Design through their website www.aldapereiradesign.com In Pictures: Alda has dressed her bed with Sömn Natural Duvet Cover in King Size, Off White Fitted Sheet and Pillowcases also in King Size.
