What is it about the New Year? There’s something of an electric energy at the start of the year, but it's also a time for reflection. At Sömn, we like to use this window to look back and consider the impact we want to make moving forward.
For us, 2023 was transformative. Beyond significant business milestones, we achieved some incredible statistics in terms of the environment. These accomplishments aren't just significant to our team; they're a testament to how small decisions like shopping sustainably empower us to create a brighter future together. Here's a look at some of our greatest achievements in 2023.
1. Optimized Production
Our commitment to reducing waste inspired the launch of our Upcycled Tabletop Collection, where linen offcuts were used to create coasters, napkins, placemats, and more. In 2023, efforts to streamline production processes yielded significant waste reduction, so the offcuts available for upcycling have considerably diminished, resulting in a decrease in the availability of upcycled items, which are expected to be depleted by 2024.
2. Giving Back
As a local business, we’re proud to support our community. In 2023, we contributed to the success of the BGC's Club House Gala with in-kind donations. We also helped raise over $1.55 million, providing vital care for Canuck Place children and families.
3. New Products Launched
Running a business means embracing change personally and professionally. Both our founders completed courses aimed at fostering growth. One of the outcomes has been product development rooted in customer feedback, which lead to the launch of new best-selling items and product lines, including the Dash Table Collection, new Bathrobes, the Organic Gauze Loungewear Set, and our luxurious new Linen Waffle Towels, just to name a few.
4. Packaging Co. Collab
As a team dedicated to comfort without cost to the environment, we continually look at how we can improve processes, everything from how products are made to how they’re shipped. Our eco-friendly packaging (tissues, tapes, stickers, and stuffing) is made from recycled, recyclable, sustainable, or biodegradable materials. Our collaboration with the Better Packing Co. contributed to many achievements including 20,000 trees planted, 1.2 million kg of plastic pollution removed from the environment, and more than 1.4 million kg of virgin plastic consumption averted!
5. Planet-Friendly, Picture Perfect
All Sömn, we create products grounded in detail, with small touches that add to the beauty and function of our luxurious linen bedding and home textiles. Crafted from certified non-toxic OEKO-TEX textiles, like 100% pure natural linen and 100% organic cotton, our homewares are safe for the planet and your skin.
