Oh-Sömn-Sustainable: Our A-Z Commitment Packaged Up!

by Somn Home |

Sustainability requires a 360 approach. That’s why we’ve “packaged up” our responsible approach to the packing material used for Sömn’s sustainable bedding and towels

Eco-friendly has become one of the buzziest keywords around. Brands and businesses are looking for ways to be socially and environmentally responsible because that’s what consumers want, especially that all-important 18-35-year-old market.

As a sustainable bedding and towel company, we know that sustainability means looking beyond products and processes. That’s why we are improving the way we package and wanted to dive into what you can expect when you receive your future order.

At Sömn Home, environmentalism is a priority, right down to the tissues, tapes, stickers, and stuffing used for shipping. Almost everything comes from recycled, recyclable, sustainable, or biodegradable materials as part of our commitment to optimize end-of-life scenarios in all materials used.

What is Eco-Friendly Packaging?

Simply put, it is packaging that, over time, reduces its environmental footprint. This can happen in several ways:

  • Ingredients - using 100% recycled or sustainable materials
  • Production - minimizing the production process and carbon footprint
  • Recyclability/Reusability: Creating a circular economy around the packaging, extending its life cycle and usability.

At Sömn Home, we know using recyclable materials is a huge net positive for the planet. For example, did you know that 90% of the materials sent to recycling facilities are successfully recycled and sold? It’s true. And that recycling paper saves about 60% of the energy necessary to create new paper? You can read more about it. But, in a nutshell, payoffs around recycling and using recycled materials are pretty darn significant.

Of course, recycling isn’t a silver bullet. Before recycling even becomes an issue, you need to consider the materials used to make the products. Does harvesting these products prevent future generations from meeting their needs—or can these raw materials be easily replaced? That’s sustainability in a nutshell, and it’s something we take pretty seriously.

So, what can you expect when you order our beautiful, super sustainable bedding and/or towels? Well, shipping is a messy process. We never know exactly what our products will encounter on the way to their forever home. For maximum protection, your sheets/towels are placed in protective garment bags that are B Corp certified and biodegradable. These bags are placed in either a recycled/reusable polybag for long distance shipping or a recycled kraft paper shopping bag for local delivery. In the case of larger orders, items are packaged in a cardboard box, one of the most recyclable materials on earth, and packed with a bit of kraft paper for stuffing, which is—yes, you guessed—100% recyclable.

For sealing on paper boxes, we use a 100% recyclable and compostable kraft flatback sealing tape to protect against damp and weather during transportation. You’ll also find a recyclable postcard and some eco-friendly stickers within your package.

As a sustainable bedding and towel company, we look carefully at the full product lifecycle, emphasizing agricultural pollution and sustainability. From how materials are harvested and produced to shipping and end-of-life cycles, we strive to minimize our impact while delivering the very best wellness-obsessed home textiles.

A perfect example would be our wind-woven Eco Towels with commitments to full traceability through the whole manufacturing process. We also invest in carbon offsets. Our offset contributions support forest protection initiatives, including funding the Jarí Para Forest Conservation Project in the Amazon Rainforest.

At Sömn Home, our luxury brand of sustainable home textiles makes eco-friendly a more effortless process. As a company, we aim to become a regenerative force for the planet. We believe that small decisions (like choosing the right bags and stickers) can have significant impacts, so we take the time to make the right ones. And that's our approach—packaged up.
