For Love and Laundry: Tips to Care for Sömn Luxury Linens

In gorgeous nature-inspired shades like oatmeal, cinnamon, and lemon, the world of luxury bedding is awash in the love of linen; follow these simple care tips to keep your investment looking and feeling, oh, Sömn spectacular.

How to wash and dry your Sömn linen:

Recommended Detergent: Gentle
Water Temperature: Cool to warm, below 30ºC / 86ºF
Cycle Type: Gentle
Dryer setting: Low heat, remove while slightly damp to reduce wrinkles

Special Treatments: No chlorine bleach or enzymatic detergents, pre-treat stains with natural detergents, no softeners.

Iron Settings: Press on low; while the fabric is slightly damp (use a steamer for the best results)

We made Sömn linen bed sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers to last. Spun from 100% European long-staple yarns, every piece in our collection is stone-washed and preshrunk for an at-home care routine that's almost as easy as cotton, plus or minus a few stylish creases.

General Care Tips for Linen

Linen is naturally antibacterial, so it doesn't need frequent washing. About once every two to three weeks is okay, meaning Sömn can help lower environmental impact even around the home.

We got you sorted

When it's time to refresh your Sömn sustainable bedding, start with sorting the laundry. Separating light and dark colours in the wash keeps colours fresh and vibrant. Avoid acidic skincare substances or harsh enzymatic detergents that can cause colours to bleed and fade. However, it's 100% okay to wash your linen sheets with other similarly coloured natural fibres like bamboo or cotton.

Washer cycle and temperature settings

We recommend a cool to warm temperature, about 30ºC / 86ºF, on a gentle wash cycle. Avoid long laundry cycles with high-speed spins that will cause the sheets to twist. Make sure any flaps are closed/buttoned and avoid overloading the machine—sheets should be free to move and tumble in loose folds to achieve a deep and thorough clean.

Fit to be dried

It's important to note not all linen sheets can be machine dried. Using the dryer is safe with Sömn because we preshrink our fabric to maximize convenience and avoid shrinkage. Choose a low-heat 10 to 15-minute timed cycle. Exposing natural linen to high heat damages the fibres, affecting the quality, colour, and even the overall lifespan of the product. For those who prefer air drying, smooth the hems and edges before placing the linens on a drying rack or outdoor clothesline. These simple steps will help the linen to hold its shape and prolong a fabulous fit and lifespan.

Embrace the wrinkled look—or not

While we're all for the soft, rumpled look, we understand it's not for everyone. To minimize wrinkling, pull the sheets out of the dryer while they're still damp and allow to air dry for a softly tousled look that feels like falling into a cloud. If wrinkles are a pressing matter, you can iron linen sheets--but only while they're still damp at a low setting. Spritz using a mister with distilled water if necessary. Again, high heat can impact the colour, so we recommend steaming over ironing.

Storage

Once sheets are clean and dry, you can return them to the linen closet or another cool, dry place. For more extended periods, placing linens into a sealed bag first can protect the natural beauty and integrity of our 100% flax-spun low-impact linens, so they’re crisp and fresh for when you need them.

General Dos and Don'ts

  • Do use an all-natural detergent in the wash
  • Do use a low to medium dryer setting
  • Do use a mattress protector
  • Do rotate your linens with 2-3 other sets to maximize the lifespan
  • Do pre-treat stains by applying natural detergent to stained area about 15 minutes before washing
  • Do store in a cool, dry place in sealed bags for best protection
  • Don't overload the washer or dryer; items that tangle and bunch in the sheets may lead to fraying or tears
  • Don't expose linens to harsh/acidic substances, including bleach and skin care products that can cause dyes to bleed and fade
  • Don't use fabric softeners or enzymatic detergents—these break down natural fibres, dramatically reducing the life span of linen
