Easy, Sustainable Ways to Make a Positive Impact in the New Year

Small steps like investing in gifts and purchases that give back, like Sömn’s Eco Bath Towels and Sustainable Bed Linens, an easy way to do good by becoming a more socially conscious consumer.

2021 is right around the corner, and with that comes resolutions to grow, learn, and strive toward self-improvement. Being a better person is a popular goal for a lot of people. But it’s such a grand concept. Where do you even start? For those who see the year-end as a chance to audit and reflect on life with renewed focus, we’ve got some great tips on how you can be kinder to yourself (and the world).

Being a more conscious consumer doesn’t take a lot of effort. One of the easiest ways to have a positive impact is to be aware of what you’re supporting when you spend your hard-earned dollars.

It can be hard to see the benefits of buying organic or overlooking companies that use sweatshop labour. But individual decisions can add up to large positive changes. That’s why at Sömn Home, we’ve adopted a smart, sustainable approach for our wellness-obsessed textiles.

Opt for Ethical Products

One of the easiest ways to get started is to consider ethical products. As part of our mission, all raw materials are ethically sourced, which means global farmers can make a reasonable living selling their crops. Although it’s a small decision, supporting businesses that opt for ethically sourced products creates a better life for people and communities all around the globe.

Look at the Label

Another easy step is to look for sustainably manufactured products. These are products that are kinder to the environment. For example, Sömn’s sustainable bed linens and bath towels are produced without the harsh colourant and dyes that cause harmful run-offs (and skin irritation).

Today, identifying brands made using sustainable processes and raw materials is easy, thanks to reputable third-party certifications. For example, our cotton bedding collection is both GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX certified. GOTS certification means a textile must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers; OEKO-TEX is only awarded to sustainably produced textiles.

By simply looking for labels that carry reputable third-party certifications, you’ll know you’re investing in smart, sustainably made products that work to protect and conserve precious global resources.

Think Long Term

Cheap textiles, most notably fast fashion, have been an ongoing challenge both in terms of depleting resources and adding to landfills. Thinking long-term means assessing value and investing in products that last. While mass-produced goods cost less upfront, they need to be repaired and replaced more frequently, thereby erasing any original savings (and that doesn’t even account for the environmental toll).

Investing in quality products means supporting artisans who care deeply about their work and creating long-lasting heirloom products. Sömn’s linen bed sheets are produced in one of the oldest mills in Europe. Every thread represents a piece of craftsmanship. These pieces become more distinct and luxuriously soft with every wash, so you’ll use them for years. In other words, you save money and reduce waste.

Be the Change

As modern consumers, it’s up to all of us to access the information so readily available online and weigh the ethics and standards of our daily consumption. The good news is that conscious consumerism is making a real difference.

Did you know that before 2013, only about 20% of S&P 500 companies disclosed ESG (environmental, social, and governance) information? However, last year 90% of these companies published sustainability/responsibility, which shows that companies are responding to consumer habits and expectations.

The Sustainable Evolution

Today, there are plenty of options for making smart, sustainable choices. Textiles are a great example of an industry that’s evolved to meet changing demands. Gone are the days when sustainable cloth consisted almost exclusively of macrame-style plant holders and crunchy tie-dyed hemp. Today, sustainably-made textiles are elegant, low maintenance, mindfully designed creations designed to accentuate the modern home and lifestyle.

Giving Back

As a final consideration, why not consider supporting businesses that give back? A lot of organizations support different causes. At Sömn, a portion from every order goes to our carbon offset emission fund that is currently supporting the Jarí Para Forest Conservation Project in the Amazon Rainforest.

Sömn Sustainability

We’ve curated Sömn Home as a brand for every style, sensibility, and budget. By choosing global partners who are transparent in their purpose and practices, we gain an in-depth understanding of every aspect of our product—from the land where raw materials are cultivated to the facilities that spin the yarn and materialize the finished product.

Our mission is to understand our impact, both on the local community and global community. And we do this so we can choose how your money is contributed back into the wider economy.

Discover how Sömn sustainability translates into products that are generous in fabric, elegant in design, effortless to use, and just plain good-looking. Owner tested and approved, investing in pieces like Sömn’s sustainable collection of linen bedding and eco-friendly bath towels is a great way to be kind to the world, the environment,—and yourself.
