Creating Home Harmony with Colour

The Pantone Color Institute just announced its colour of the year. In 2024, PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz captures a desire “to nurture ourselves and others.”

It's a velvety, gentle hue that sits between pink and orange, perhaps reminiscent of your favourite lip gloss. Every year, this colour becomes a theme in fashion houses and design studios, with teams at Polaroid, Ruggable, and Spoonflower already releasing collaborations. From using bold hues as neutrals to soothing blues, we’ve shared the trends designers are using to inspire a sense of joy and renewal inside the home.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute™, the colour choice of 2024 “echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a colour radiant with warmth and modern elegance. A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless.”

Colour trends are a topic we love. What better way to capture mood and personality inside the home than with a fresh and innovative colour board? As a soft, heartfelt hue. Peach Fuzz seemingly captures the spirit of a world on the mend. It expresses the desire to nurture kindness, compassion, and connection—something we all need after too much isolation and political upheaval. It’s also likely why Peach has long been a perennial favourite in our European linen sheets and pillowcases.

We introduced our version in 2021. We wanted a colour that was optimistic, social, and adventurous, with a hint of warm-hearted fun and frivolity that calls out to the inner child. Orange-y tones, in general, connect to joy, creativity, and a sense of natural wellness—all feelings we need in a post-pandemic world. This earthy hue pairs beautifully with warm materials such as leather, reclaimed wood, cord, and heavy fabrics against a background of white, it’s a style that feels very fresh and modern.

Another way designers are using colour in 2024 is by layering tones. Try playing with different tones within one family for spaces that exude an effortlessly chic feel. You can layer up different patterns and textures for a tone-on-tone approach that works well for decorating novices who want to elevate home style. Try pairing peachy tones with earthy leather headboards, subtle wallpaper, light coloured wood side tables, and natural textured rugs for a look that is cozy and cohesive.

If peach isn’t your go-to, green has arrived in a big way. Likely a nod to the sustainability trends dominating the world stage for the last few years. An earthy shade of green is surprisingly versatile. Depending on the shade, it can be used as a neutral, with really dark shades looking almost charcoal or black, two more trends making a statement in home design this year.

2023 saw some designers moving away from Scandinavian design or at least tempering earthy colours and design with elements of maximalism meant to invoke escapism, fantasy, luxury, and richness. However, the earthy trend continues with muted shades like Mineral Green, which can be paired with creams, browns, and rusts to extend the serenity of nature past the windows and into the home.

While trends have generally shifted away from cooler tones, blues never really go out of style. In fact, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams both made shades of blue their colour choice for 2024. Depending on the tone, blues can be serene or energized. It’s an extremely effective shade for creating spaces to detox from technology, work concerns, and stress in general—a shade that is still going very strong at the House of Sömn.

When you find yourself on a mission to create inspired spaces for the home, let colour lead the way in creating visual harmony. We invite you to think about how these hues, starting with PANTONE 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, inspire joy—and create wellness infused spaces that reflect safety, comfort, connection, and serenity for homes that are so much more than “beautiful” and cozy.
