An Interior Designer’s View: Meet Gillian from Gillian Segal Design

In a city that consists of a majority of neutral palette suiters, Gillian Segal's boldness in residential design is what makes her Vancouver Interior Design Studio a symbolic one. On a typical day at the Gillian Segal Design office, you can expect to see Gillian and her team gather around a large table with a glass of vino as they go over materials and brainstorm-"where all the magic happens!" the team says.

Gillian has tried and tested both Sömn Eco Cotton Bamboo Towels & Linen Beddings in her own space where she shared with us her personal Sömn experience and answered a few design-related questions to keep you in the loop of the 2021 interior design trends. Hope you like it!

How did Gillian Segal Design come about; what was your turning point?

"I noticed from a young age I was always gravitating towards design. Fast forward a couple of years as I was in university undergoing my bachelor of arts degree and I found myself most intrigued in the classes that focused on the history and meaning behind art/design. After linking two and two together I decided to come back to Vancouver to obtain my technical education in design with BCIT. I was lucky enough to have a boss and mentor that supported me to slowly start building my own clientele until I was ready to branch off to my own firm. "

How would you describe your firm's design creative process?

"I would say it all starts with the client. Our clients become our project muse so gaining a deep understanding of how they live, and how they aspire to live is always our first step. As we move through the process it is a very collaborative approach between our team and client, in which we work very closely together. We value the clients' feedback and it really shapes the project moving forward and the client contribution changes the project direction into paths we may have not had otherwise considered."

What are your current design inspirations?

"Our team does a great job of finding inspiration from a variety of inspirational sources other than obvious avenues such as Instagram / social media. Currently, we have been gravitating towards vintage magazines, runways, and old movies (always inspired by the 60s)."

Tell us about the top 2021 interior design trends that you've applied to your projects this year?

"Colour, colour, colour. After the year 2020, I have found myself (and our clients) gravitating towards more fun, bold statement design."

What do you love about Sömn Bedding & Towels and why?

"For the bedding, it is the softest most amazing linen - so comfortable and the quality is truly amazing. For the towels, I love how the fabric is slightly looped from an aesthetic perspective but they are also so soft and absorbing."

What are your tips on choosing a good set of beddings?

"Consider how you actually sleep (i.e., do you run hot or cold?). You will want to pick a fabric that compliments that. Also, think about how you are actually going to make your bed. I really love linen because of the feeling but I also love that it actually looks good if it is wrinkly/messy because I don't have a lot of time to make my bed perfectly every morning."

What kinds of projects will you be working on in the coming months?

"We are working on an array of super exciting projects! Some being here in Vancouver and some not...you will have to stay tuned to see our project updates!"

One random interesting fact that we don't know about you?

"I used to be a gymnast and I still have my back handspring :)"
