Scientifically, self-affirmations have been linked with decreased health-deteriorating stress, better academic achievement, and higher physical activity. One study even noted that smokers reacted less dismissively to graphic cigarette packet warnings and reported intention to change their behaviour (Harris et al., 2007).

  • Avoid negativity - instead of I need to exercise because I don’t feel good, try: I deserve to exercise because it allows me to perform better in all areas of life.
  • Look to core values – creating affirmations based on foundational beliefs to drive home why they’re essential to you.
  • Make it believable. Don’t be afraid to rephrase or pivot if affirmations don’t feel genuine; make them your own.
  • Practice consistently and stay patient – remember creating meaningful and lasting changes in thinking patterns takes time.
